iPhone timer will not create a sound

I ran into a situation where the timer would not create sound. All it did was vibrate for about 1/10 of a second. Note this similar community question: what to do if my timer doesn't work? - Apple Community was never explained. I have the answer.

I'm running iOS 15.7.3 on an iPhone 6s. It also happens on an iPhone SE that I have, running the same OS. (This is the latest one for this phone.) It also happens on my iPad running iOS 15.6.1.

I discovered that it only happened when the time was set to exactly 5 minutes. Not 5 minutes and 1 second. Not 4 minutes and 59 seconds. The setting for "Auto-Lock" inside "Display & Brightness" in the settings menu is also set to 5 minutes. This is the problem. The timer won't ring when you set the timer to the Auto-Lock time!

So to reproduce this yourself, set the Auto-Lock time to 1 minute and then try to make the timer ring after one minute. After starting the timer do not touch the phone. You'll see that it will not create a sound.

I already have the most recent OS for my phone. The point of my message was to help other people who might have the same problem. And to suggest to Apple that they fix it.

Hello Danny Sleator,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with the sound on your timer. Try the steps here to see if they resolve the issue: How to set and change alarms on your iPhone - Apple Support

"If the alarm volume is too low or quiet

Do Not Disturb and the Ring/Silent switch don't affect the alarm sound. If you set your Ring/Silent switch to Silent or turn on Do Not Disturb, the alarm still sounds.

If you have an alarm that doesn't sound or is too quiet, or if your iPhone only vibrates, check the following:

  • Set the volume on your iPhone. If your alarm volume is too low or too loud, press the volume up or volume down button to adjust it. You can also go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the slider under Ringtone and Alert Volume.
  • If your alarm only vibrates, make sure that your alarm sound isn't set to None. Open the Clock app, tap the Alarm tab, then tap Edit. Tap the alarm, then tap Sound and choose a Sound.
  • If you connect headphones to your iPhone, the alarm plays at a set volume through the built-in speakers on your iPhone as well as wired and wireless headphones.

Manually adjusting the time on your iPhone in Settings to change app behavior, like game timers, isn't recommended and can affect alarms."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
