Factory reset or use our apple id

My father just passed away and I now have his iPad. Should we factory reset it or just use our Apple ID and delete all his apps? Thanks so very much

Do you know his Apple ID and password? If not, you can't fully utilize the device because at some point it will ask you for that information. As for whether or not you ultimately erase it, you need to decide that. If you sign out of his account and sign in with yours it will ask you if you want to keep and combine information from both accounts. In some cases people want to do this for keeping things like photos. However, this can also result in some undesired mixing. Unless you're in that position you should probably just do as instructed in this article --> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

There is nothing on dads iPad that we need. It’s only apps for dementia. So if there is nothing we are keeping then what do we do? Reset to factory settings and then what? Does my husband sign In with his iCloud username and password? If so then there is nothing more we need to do? Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for being so patient with me. I am not very tech savvy. I see that the first thing to do is to sign out of iCloud and iTunes and App Store.

then according to the notes it says settings>your name

scroll down and tap sign out.

enter Apple ID password and tap turn off.

after all that is done go back to settings and tap general>reset>erase all content and settings.

that’s it? Two questions left:

I can still use the same SIM card correct? That’s not affected?

also the email on this iPad is my husbands email account. So I am to assume that when setting it all back up, I have to reset the email back as well correct? His computer is not synced to dads iPad so if I delete the email messages, they won’t be deleted on my husbands MacBook Air?

sorry for all the questions. Thank you so much for helping me. I really appreciate it.

The SIM card is only used to store phone service settings from your telephone service provider. You can leave it in if you want to continue the service.

After you erase it, it will be like brand new. It needs to be set up completely. Do not delete the emails first, simply erase the entire device. If you delete them first then iCloud may assume you wish to delete them everywhere. Erasing the entire device just remove things from that device.
