Safari pages shrinking to left on opening

I have a problem using Safari on my iPad mini - I’ve seen lots of posts both here and on the Reddit iPad mini forum - lots of people are having the same problem with Safari shrinking pages on their iPad mini.

it’s been going on for months.

Apple discussions expert answers have been no help at all unfortunately.

Pages open fine at first, but then immediately shrink to about half size down the left of the page, which means text is unreadably small.

If you zoom in, or use fingers to enlarge the page, then the page swims about on screen and only part of it is visible.

I’ve tried clearing history and cookies and restarting my iPad.

I’m on the latest update 16.2

I’m NOT set to view desktop website versions.

This is the second time I’ve had this problem on the iPad. Last time I spent hours googling solutions trying to fix it and finally it cleared up on its own. No idea why.

How can I fix this?

Hi Shanebea,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

It sounds like you may be using Split View or Slide Over . This page can explain more: Use multitasking on your iPad.

"Make adjustments to multitasking windows

When you have multiple apps open, you can make adjustments to customize your multitasking experience.

Adjust Split View

  • To adjust the apps' sizes, drag the app divider to the left or right. To give the apps equal space, drag the app divider to the center of the screen.
  • To turn a Split View app into a Slide Over app, tap the Multitasking button , then tap the Slide Over button . Or you can touch and hold the Multitasking button, then drag the app onto the other app.
  • To close Split View, tap the Multitasking button  in the app that you want to keep, then tap the full screen button . Or you can drag the app divider over the app that you want to close.
  • To replace an app, swipe down from the top of the app, then choose another app from your Home Screen or Dock.

Adjust Slide Over

  • To move the Slide Over app, use the Multitasking button  to drag it to the left or right.
  • To turn a Slide Over app into a Split View app, tap the Multitasking button , then tap the Split View button . Or you can touch and hold the Multitasking button, then drag the app to the left or right edge of the screen.
  • To hide a Slide Over app, touch and hold the Multitasking button , then swipe the app off the screen to the left or right.
  • To see the other apps that you have in Split View, touch and hold the bottom edge of the app, then drag up. The other Split View apps appear, and you can tap an app to switch to it or swipe up on it to close it."

Also, iPad OS 16.3 was recently released. We'd advise updating: Update your iPhone or iPad.

Have a fantastic day!

Shanebea,

Thanks for the clarification.

It sounds like you've been seeing this over multiple apps and devices so isolating this issue has been a bit tough. We know you want to get to the bottom of this.

Since this is ongoing, it may be best to connect with Apple Support so they can look into this a bit further with you. You can start that conversation with them here: Contact - Official Apple Support

If you have any other questions, we're here for you.

Take care!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply but no, I am not using split or side view or multi tasking.

This happens on Safari, just on certain pages.

At the moment it happens on Amazon - but ONLY when I click on an item in my basket to look at the details.

I had the same problem on Safari a few weeks ago (it cleared up on its own eventually, no idea how or why). That time it started with just one website on Safari and then every website opened the same way.

Yesterday I noticed the same thing is happening on my husband’s iPad when he opens the Amazon app.

I’ve seen loads of people (going back years and continuing right up to the last few weeks) report the same problem (not just with Amazon), both here and on the Reddit forum, but no one has offered an explanation or a solution.
