Autocorrect is making incorrect corrections

Why is autocorrect getting less accurate? It has a terrible time with its and it's; it usually gets it wrong. And I just typed "**** no" and it autocorrected it to "He'll no". That's not even grammatically correct. Often it corrects a millisecond before I hit Send, so the text goes out wrong. So irritating!

I have tried correcting it and it DOESN’T learn. Something happened in a recent update that made it significantly worse.

It has gotten so bad that I turned autocorrect off, but that was just worse. Autocorrect used to be really good.

I’m getting REALLY tired of typing something that is grammatically correct, then my phone switching to something else that makes absolutely no sense immediately before I send. The grammar corrections are outright wrong. I’m an editor, so it’s more than embarrassing when I send a message that’s incorrect. What I don’t understand is why it’s correct when I type it, then it CHANGES IT for no reason.

There should be people working on this problem who know grammar rules. This needs to be fixed. Even writing this post, my phone has made numerous corrections that are not correct.

In this screen shot, I had written lampworking correctly as one word, and it separated the two words…I use this word frequently, but there’s no way to add it to a dictionary like on my Mac. It doesn’t learn if I correct it. Secondly, I used the word “its” at the end of this message thread, which is correct for the possessive form, and my phone switched it to “it’s” which is the contraction of “it” and “is.” I have to make this correction ALL THE TIME. “We’re” and “were” are mis-corrected all the time. Heck, even just writing the last sentence my phone changed “mis-corrected” to “Mia-corrected” TWICE. Mia-corrected makes no sense! 😖

Hey PhantomsMaid,

Since you know the word that is misspelled, type it in and then tap the "x" in the correction box to cancel the adjustment before it is rendered. The iPhone will learn the correct spelling, but you'll have to repeat the process a few times before it stops correcting the phrase. If you accidentally accepted an incorrect word change by mistake, the previously typed word will reappear in a bubble. If you tap it, the shift will be undone, which is another way to help your iPhone learn how to spell those words correctly.

You can also reset the keyboard dictionary. If you're having trouble with a large number of terms besides the one you mentioned, this could be the quickest way to fix them all at once. Only the words you've modified are removed when you reset the keyboard dictionary. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary or by following the steps next to the bullet point "Reset Keyboard Dictionary" in Return iPhone settings to their defaults. Back up your iPhone settings before restoring them to their defaults if you want to save them. If restoring settings to their defaults doesn't solve the issue, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.

If the issue remains after following those steps, let us know what steps you had a chance to try from above.

We hope this helps!

Best regards.

I also find this extremely annoying. I am having the same problem on both my work and personal iPhones, mostly with the word "well". No matter what I do, the phone always want to autocorrect it to "we'll", even when it doesn't make sense in the sentence. I have tried your suggestion of clicking the x to cancel out of the correction and my phone still has not learned I rarely - if ever - want it to correct this word to we'll. I don't want to turn AC off since I do like it but may not have a choice since I frequently use "well" and your algorithms can't seem to get it right.

On a side note, I have done some searching on the web and it appears this has been an ongoing problem with your phones since at least 9 years ago. Doesn't appear Apple actually listens to their users.
