iOS Autocorrect is suggesting incorrect spelling

iOS keeps suggesting incorrect spelling for ordinary words. This is one of many examples: iOS is suggesting that my correct spelling of “insurance” should be changed to “insirince,” a nonsensical word not found in any dictionary on earth. This happens frequently with a number of other common English (US) words. Baffling and frustrating.

I’ve reset my language multiple times, cleared out all autocorrect settings and saved autocorrect words, enabled and disabled spell check, etc. and am still at a loss. Is there something I’m missing or is iOS autocorrect just terrible?

iPhone 14 Plus, iOS 18

Hello, I appreciate the reply but that is not what happened.

I was unable to duplicate what you had described in your reply. iOS is happy to let me spell “insirince” without changing the word. The suggestion for “insirince” came up immediately after I had correctly typed “insurance.” I did not type “insirince” the first time, and I did not click on a suggested spelling correction.

  • Autocorrect is set to on in my keyboard settings
  • My Keyboard is “English (US)”
  • I have no text replacements saved/there are no active text replacements that might be causing this
  • iOS: 18.3.2

Interesting. I would suggest you Force Restart your device, and if that doesn’t help with the problem, reach out to Apple Support:

Best of luck!

Yes it is. My guess is that its Apple 'intelligence' copying misspellings and mistypings from other users and suggesting it as corrections. The developers should know NEVER TRUST USER INPUT! This started happening when I switched from an iPhone X to iPhone 16. This happens about every fifth word.

Sorry I don't have a solution, though I would really like one, Apple!

Is Apple addressing this? This looks like a flawed strategy for sourcing spelling. There should be no other source than a dictionary for autocorrect. It seems to mine data from the users contact list for names, and possibly past usages and probably other sources for proper names of public figures. I'd say the rare benefit of those sources is offset by the more frequent nuisance suggestions it makes. Can there at least be a setting that turns off sources other than the dictionary for autocorrect?
