WD external drive won't mount

I have a 4TB Western Digital external drive but it no longer mounts on my Macbook desktop. I can see it in Disk Utility but it refuses to mount. I have tried Terminal command sudo pkill -f fsck as recommended by a friend but I get a "Could not mount "4TB Drive". (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119939874.) Anyone know what this means or how to get around this? I have V important files on this drive so don't want to reformat it or erase it.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there ch374n72,

We'd like to help by confirming more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that the external drive doesn't mount, but does show within Disk Utility. Do any messages show when you first plug it into your Mac regarding the external drive?
  2. When you view it within Disk Utility, in which file format is your external drive formatted?
  3. If it worked without no issues in the past, when did this start to occur?
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  5. We see you have macOS 12.3 installed, but the latest version for that older version is macOS 12.6.3. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!
