Do you want to enable dictation dialog box randomly appears
I'm having an issue with my MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2021, M1 Pro) running MacOS Ventura 13.1. I would like to see if anyone can help with.
Starting on Friday (Jan 20, 2023) the 'Do you want to enable Dictation?' dialog box keeps appearing. There is no rhyme or reason why it appears. I do not have dictation enabled. I've turned this on and off under the System Setting->Keyboard->Dictation setting. The dialog box appears either way. I also updated the Shortcut key option to all the available options and created a few custom ones. When I press the shortcut key the dialog box does come up as expected. But this does not change the behavior of the dialog box coming up randomly.
Since this is random and doesn't require interaction with the keyboard or trackpad it's making me think that it's software related. I can't confirm for sure, but I remember there being an Office 365 update that was installed when I opened an excel sheet Friday morning before all this happened. I've uninstalled all the the Office applications but dragging the applications to the Trash. I have Hazel installed. In Hazel I have App Sweep enabled. This indicated quite a few files associated with the Office tools and I confirmed deletion of those files. I started to look around in the /Library folders and found a few other Office related files. So I reinstalled Office. Then followed the instructions to manually delete Office. I wanted to make sure I had everything they recommended. Afterwards I did another look at the /Library and found a few other Microsoft folders which I deleted.
I've contacted Apple support and after a chat session, and few phones calls we've tried all sorts of things. A few highlights of the things we've tried are the setting updates I mentioned above. We updated some accessibility setting including voice control. There were quite a few other settings that I can't remember, we tested quite a few.
We've created a test user. The issue does not appear for the test user. I'm going to retest that again but for a longer time. We also booted into safe mode, the dialog box also appears randomly there. I've reinstalled MacOS Ventura 13.1 a few times from the boot up options and from a Ventura 13.1 usb installer I created yesterday.
I also checked to make sure there were no crumbs or other objects under any keys. There was not. I also confirmed that no key was sticking. I also pressed each key individually to see if one key causes the dialog box. I couldn't find a particular key that would launch the dialog box. Like I mentioned before it is random and it does not require me to touch the keyboard or trackpad.
A few things about the dialog box actions in general. It does happen randomly. The intervals are not specific. Sometimes right after pressing the Not Now button the dialog box appears immediately. Other times it takes 2 or 3 minutes before reappearing. I've gotten into the habit of just moving the dialog box just off screen. Basically out of the way so I can still use the MacBook. It can stay were I placed it for hours. Then all of a sudden it just appears in the middle of the screen in focus.
I also selected OK from the dialog box. This launches another dialog box with three options. Enable, Dictation Policy and Cancel. Selecting Dictation Policy or Cancel does not resolve the issue. Selecting Enable does enable dictation. Using the shortcut key enables and disable dictation as expected. But when dictation is running it randomly flashes up. It shows the microphone, then three empty circles, then disappears.
The good thing is when dictation is enabled the dialog box doesn't come back up. But since dictation is not working as expected and also randomly coming up, it's not worth leaving enabled. Also I didn't have this enable before this issue came up. So it's making me feel there is something else going on.
I should also mention that I ran the free version Malware Bytes and no virus were found.
As I mentioned above Apple support and I tried several things. I listed just a few as I can't remember every single one.
If anyone has any thoughts on why this is happening, other things to look at such as log files, or can offer any setting to check out please let me know.
I appreciate any help you can provide.
