Contact Merge Not Working - IOS 16.2

I have IOS 16.2 on an iPhone XR. I was thrilled to see the contact merge feature, because some glitch in the syncing between Apple and Microsoft caused my entire address book to be duplicated, with some entries in the address book 6 or more times. The phone says I have 1757 duplicate contacts. When I view the duplicates, then tap "Merge All" and then confirm "Merge Duplicates" I see a note just below "My Card" that says "Merging Duplicates" with the little spinning circle to the right of it. Sometimes it will stay that way for an extended time, other times if I look again after the screen goes dark, I am back to the Contacts screen telling me I have 1757 duplicate contacts. The bottom line is that the contacts never merge. It is like Groundhog Day. I have done numerous searches, but cannot find anything to tell me what to do if the merge feature does not work as advertised. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

I’m sorry but this reply is useless. I have the same issue and my iOS version is up to date. I don’t have a Mac and therefore your suggestion doesn’t work. Also that actual article is not covering a fix for this issue.

Hi WMWHV,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

You're having an issue with merging contacts.

We're happy to assist.

We recommend checking out the steps in the section titled "Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly" from the article here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

1) Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2) Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3) Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4) If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5) Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

The reason we ask you to update your iPhone is because updating your device is an important troubleshooting step that can potentially resolve your issue since iOS 16.3 was just recently released.

Should the issue continue, then take a look at the article here: Merge contact cards in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support

Please let us know the outcome after giving the above steps a try.

Cheers!
