Update = installing updated files relative to the currently installed macOS, e.g. macOS 10.15.1 > macOS 10.15.2.
Upgrade = installing a newer version of macOS than is currently installed, e.g. macOS Mojave > MacOS Catalina.
Click the Apple menu at top left, select About This Mac > Software Update... within the info box. If there are updates available for your currently installed OS, then they should be listed for you. If there are no updates available there will be none listed.
❗️ Do NOT upgrade until you have made a Time Machine or other backup of your startup drive.
