'Unknown Part - Unable to determine if your iPhone battery is a genuine Apple part' Message

"My iPhone 12 now has "Unable to determine if your iPhone battery is a genuine Apple part" notice after latest update in December. I have not had any battery issues and the phone is actually a new phone issued by Apple (to replace an iPhone 12 mini that was damaged by the July 2022 update.) I've noticed there have been similar prior posts from earlier updates. Is Apple Support taking care of these problems? Or are they trying to make everyone pay for battery replacements?

Well big surprise. They had an IOS update today, and after the update ran, the Battery message disappeared. Guess I can cancel my Apple Genius Bar appointment now!

An Unknown Part  message will appear if the battery installation is incomplete or if the battery:

  • Was replaced with a nongenuine battery
  • Was already used or installed in another iPhone
  • Isn't functioning as expected

Most likely, the replacement phone that Apple provided you, may or may not have had its battery replaced. However, it would have been done by Apple and should be an original part. That would leave the last item the likely culprit. Regardless, if you are having battery issues with your phone, you should visit your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them take a look and provide you with your option.


Alternately, you can contact Apple Support directly by using the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.

Thx. I have the same opinion, but worry that they'll use the excuse that it's a 'replacement' to avoid taking care of it. That's why I was wondering if anyone else had experience with the same problem, and how Apple resolved it for them.


It took 5 days for them to finally acknowledge in July that the update then had destroyed something with the cellular connection in my original phone - after a number of Apple techs worked on it - and replace it at no cost. So I guess I'll see how they respond to this issue this time.

Thanks Tesserax. I have contacted Support and all they can tell me is they see the same problem after connecting to my phone. So I have an appointment at an Apple Store next week. What they couldn't tell me is if they have to replace the battery, am I getting charged for it, even though the replacement phone is less than 6 months old, and did appear to be new in the box.
