Itunes not showing any music files when opening

I have recently transferred iTunes from Old laptop (where it was working fine) to new laptop. I have done all the steps like consolidating files etc. and pasted on the default location. Now my files are in OneDrive . But when I am opening iTunes it's not showing any music files to play.

Even if I change iTunes default location it automatically reset to its original path C:\Users\username\OneDrive\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media.

Please provide a solution or give me thread of earlier post to solve this issue. My doubt is

  1. Is tunes doesn't able to go in OneDrive location?
  2. even I save iTunes media file to C drive ,it doesn't save the problem.

The "missing file" issue with exclamation marks happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter, or you've moved a non-portable library to a different path (see Make a split library portable for details). It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place, or that you've been too aggressive when deleting duplicates. See Getting iTunes & Windows Media Player to play nicely if you're trying to access your media with any other media players.

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the file tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case. If everything is where it is supposed to be try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.

In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info, or when playing a track, but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links. Although it says something like "use the same location" I think it expects to find the tracks in the same artist & album layout they were in previously, with one systematic change to the path.

If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files, or the library has been moved from OS X to Windows, then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works. It might need some tweaking if your media is in a non-standard layout.

If you want me to try to provide specific advice please post back the following details:

  1. The location of the media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced
  2. The location of a sample missing track shown under Get Info > File > Location that begins file://localhost/
  3. The true path to the file whose details you gave in 2

Note the addition of file://localhost/ (and the flipped direction of slashes in Windows) is normal for a file that isn't quite where iTunes is expecting to find it.

iTunes is not designed to operate from within a cloud location such as OneDrive. Recent builds of iTunes don't seem to register new media folder locations properly, at least for some users. Using the default layout of an iTunes folder with the iTunes Library.itl file in it, and the iTunes Media folder, seems to work correctly.

Hello

turingtest2 ,

I tried your way. and above code Findtracks works with minor glitches. I have to some time run 2 times.

  1. Fist Time I run Findtracks with "C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media" . IF this way I am not able to locate some files than I have to run 2nd step
  2. Run FindMytracks with default location

C:\Users\usernam\OneDrive \FolderName\Music\iTunes\Music

Appreciate all your efforts and reading all the questions with Patience and answering with your expertise and it worked and saved my lot of time .

Just a Quick Last question . I am all set up with songs playing but I have my files in 2 locations

  1. C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
  2. C:\Users\usernam\OneDrive \FolderName\Music\iTunes\Music

Should I delete 2nd Folder but FindMytracks used 2nd folder if it doesn't able to locate at first instance. so do you think somesongs are linked with OneDrive ? and break the connection if i delete Folder saved in one drive ?

Thanks

Hi,

Sorry not to have got back to you sooner. iTunes doesn't play nicely with OneDrive or other cloud storage systems. Windows Explorer might show that a file is currently in the cloud, then download it automatically if you double-click to open it. iTunes might see if the same file exists, and if there is only a cloud link assume it doesn't, rather than triggering a download. If your iTunes Library.itl file is also located within OneDrive it may cause issues running iTunes, or saving changes to the library.

Ideally your iTunes library would be in C:\Users\Music\iTunes or <Another Drive>:\iTunes. The media would be in the iTunes Media folder inside one of the two previous locations. If my script is needed to repair broken links you would point it at the iTunes Media folder. Perhaps you can move/copy what you currently have in OneDrive to a local folder, with the correct ..\iTunes\iTunes Media nesting, then shift-start-iTunes and choose the library in the new location. Then use FindTracks if necessary to repair broken links that iTunes cannot repair by itself.

If I read correctly you've managed to repair all the links, but now have media split over two folders. You want everything to be in C:\Users\<User>\iTunes\iTunes Media. Assuming this is now set as your media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced you can now use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy in those files that are in the OneDrive location. Once that is done you can delete the Music folder in OneDrive.
