"Keep Originals" has disappeared from Image Capture after Ventura update

For years I have imported my iPhone images to my MacBook Pro using Image Capture. I prefer to import the images as JPG rather than HEIC. Image Capture was perfect for this: I would simply uncheck "Keep Originals" and Image Capture would automatically convert the images to JPG upon import.

However, after recently changing to an iPhone 14 Pro and updating my MacBook Pro to Ventura, I no longer see "Keep Originals" option in Image Capture. Thus, there is no way to get Image Capture to make the HEIC to JPG conversion upon import.

This is the exact same issue as described a few months ago in this thread, but was unresolved: The 'Keep originals' button does not show… - Apple Community

I have tried restarting both devices multiple times and it has not helped. I also see the "Keep Originals" option within my iPhone settings (Settings > Photos > Transfer To MAC or PC > Keep Originals), however, this setting appears to be ignored by Image Capture.

Furthermore, I believe this issue arose when I updated my MacBook Pro to Ventura. I had no problems with the iPhone 14 Pro using Image Capture in the prior OS.

Thank you to anyone who may have suggestions.

Greetings Von-R,

You can find the available methods to import photos from your iPhone to your Mac here:

Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC - Apple Support

"Import to your Mac

You can import photos and videos to your Mac by connecting your device to your Mac. However, if you use iCloud Photos, then you don't need to import.

To import to your Mac:

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac with a USB cable.
  2. Open the Photos app on your computer.
  3. The Photos app shows an Import screen with all the photos and videos that are on your connected device. If the Import screen doesn't automatically appear, click the device's name in the Photos sidebar.
  4. If asked, unlock your iOS or iPadOS device using your passcode. If you see a prompt on your iOS or iPadOS device asking you to Trust This Computer, tap Trust to continue.
  5. Choose where you want to import your photos. Next to "Import to," you can choose an existing album or create a new one.
  6. Select the photos you want to import and click Import Selected, or click Import All New Photos.
  7. Mac screen showing the photos available for import
  8. Wait for the process to finish, then disconnect your device from your Mac."

Take care.
