Studio Display on all night with my M1 mini - wasting energy

How to have studio display (Thunderbolt3) turn off at night? I have to leave mini on (i.e., I don't log off but lock account) as backups occur overnight and need to remote access when on trips. You would think something this expensive would have an on/off switch to save energy and concern about LED's on all night. Even with screen saver on, it wakes up at night for backup and brightens the room - tough on getting to sleep! My 27 iMac never had this issue. do I have to buy a Tb3 on/off switch? Thanks!

Hey there ntenz,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

The only way to get the Apple Studio Display to power completely off is to unplug it from power, as detailed in the Apple Support article about the display Important safety information Apple Studio Display - Apple Support.

That said, you should be able to put the display to sleep using the macOS Lock Screen settings. The Apple Support article Change Lock Screen settings on Mac - Apple Support discusses what the various Lock Screen settings can do, and where to adjust them. Specific to your request, try the following:

  1. Open System Settings > Lock Screen (in macOS Venture) or System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General (in previous macOS versions)
  2. In macOS Venture, select the option to Turn Display off when inactive. You can select how long the computer is idle before going to sleep.
  3. In previous versions of macOS, find the options to require a password upon wake. Within this area should be an option to indicate how long the computer should be idle before the display goes to sleep.

Have a wonderful day!

Hello ntenz,

It should not be waking up unless something is moving the mouse, bumping the table, even a pet, or another setting such as Wake for Network Access. Check your settings: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac - Apple Support

Also, was the computer designed to power on at a set time? This can be removed using terminal commands now: Schedule your Mac to turn on or off in Terminal - Apple Support

Otherwise, it might make sense to just power down the mouse using the button. Test if this helps stop the Mac from waking.

You can also leave feedback about a power switch being added here: Product Feedback - Apple

Thanks

Well, this is what I've been doing and all it does is start the screen saver per Apple info provided (I do use the black-gray saver background). It would be nice to have it turn OFF only the voltage to the screen to save energy (rest of display's cpu etc can still be on) . It's not practical to crawl on the floor each night to disconnect power from the UPS just to plug in next day! Suggest Apple add this feature to save energy for those of us that need to have the computer "awake" at night for backup while we sleep! Thanks!

thanks and yes, seems we may have had a 4-legged mouse waking up the mini. However, the best I can do is just walk away from the screen and it will turn on the screen saver until I return and unlock it. Is there any way to turn OFF the voltage to the Studio Display LED screen while leaving the cpu on? My 27" iMac turned OFF the screen, saving energy. Apple needs to fix this as its a pain to plug/unplug it as it still draws power with the screen saver on. This monitor is not energy efficient.
