APFS or HFS+ for HDD

Hi, I just bought a WD Elements 5TB HDD, and I was wondering what was the best file system to format it with. I read that APFS was recommended on SSD but still could be used on HDD, this thing sends me into confusion. Does this shorten the life of the HDD since APFS saves file system information randomly or are the benefits outweighing the risks?

Does this shorten the life of the HDD ...

No.

...since APFS saves file system information randomly ...

That is not correct.

.... or are the benefits outweighing the risks?

There are no risks. Use APFS unless you have justification not to. Justification would include the need to use that external hard disk drive with Macs running macOS versions that predate its implementation.
