I loved my first-gen AirPods, which fit perfectly and were extremely comfortable, but they no longer held a charge so I picked up a pair of third-gen AirPods. They feel much bigger, don’t seem to fit well, and are very painful. Please, someone tell me that there is a workaround and that there is a way to way to wear ear tips with these!

Of course, that cannot be answered here - other than to say Apple does not sell separate ear tips except for AirPods Pro models.

Airpods don't have eartips.
They have never had eartips.
Airpods don't go into your ear canal, they sit outside of it.
You are not supposed to shove them into your ear canal.
Alas, it has been more than two weeks. I kept thinking that it was just a question of getting used to it. But if anything the pain is getting worse rather than better. I’m a petite woman; I feel as though these were designed for a large man. Why would they not make ear tips for these?
My mistake was thinking that I just needed to get used to the third-gen airpods. My ears are now swollen, scraped, and raw. I’ve just ordered some third-party ear tips; fingers crossed that they will help.
I have to wonder if Apple isn’t leaving itself open to a class-action suit.

She has Airpods 3rd generation.
Airpods don't have eartips and never have.
Airpods Pro, a different product, has eartips.
They are not the same thing.
Well, it’s maddening that I have to spring for AirPods Pro if I don’t want to injure my ears. And no, I’m not shoving them into my ear canals. A lot of people have issues with the fit of the third-gen AirPods.
If you purchased your AirPods from Apple within the past fourteen days, return or exchange them.
