In Apple Mail, email threads remains bold when marked as read

In Apple Mail 16.0, under Mac OS Ventura 13.0.1, when marking an email thread as read, the subject line becomes regular but the rest (from, date, size) remain bold. In the "All mailboxes" window, with display set to "Columns".

Hello jfclemay,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. We understand read emails are staying bold as if they are unread. to start, are you reading the emails before marking them as read, or simply marking them as read manually?

There may be some useful tips in this user guide for changing settings on Mac Mail. Check those out below.

We hope this helps.

Hi Justin,

Try the following on Mac OS Ventura 13.1.

  • Set Apple Mail's main window to display all inboxes, in column view, with emails grouped by thread.
  • Receive an email, or several emails in the same conversation.
  • Using the search bar, find those emails (say, by searching for one word in the subject line).
  • Right-click on the email or conversation, currently bold since unready, and mark it as read.

Only the subject will become regular. The From, Date and Size will remain bold.

Thank you,

Jf
