No Red Dot for Messages on Watch

I can't get the red dot to appear on my watch when I have a message.

Watch App/Notifications/Notifications Indicator is on. It's also on when viewed from the watch itself Settings/Notifications.

Watch App/Messages is on Mirror my iPhone. iPhone Notifications/Messages Allow Notifications is on.

Have power cycled both. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi pbackstrom,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

It won't appear if you are getting your messages on your iPhone. Please see this page for more information on how notifications with the Apple Watch work: Notifications on your Apple Watch.

"If your iPhone is unlocked, you get notifications on your iPhone instead of your Apple Watch.

If your iPhone is locked or asleep, you get notifications on your Apple Watch, unless your Apple Watch is locked."

If that doesn't explain the issue, make sure both devices are fully updated:

  1. Update your Apple Watch
  2. Update your iPhone or iPad

Then contact Apple Support for a deeper dive.

Have a fantastic day!

[I got email at 3:56 PM with a response, and a link back here to respond to the response. I came here and it says "There are no replies."]

The reply just said how it's supposed to work, namely that if my iPhone is asleep in my pocket, I should get a red dot when I have a message, as long as my watch is unlocked. That used to happen but it's not happening now, which is why I'm asking for help, in case there's a setting or something that needs to change.
