Upgrade to Ventura does not support 5120x1440 on my Samsung Odyssey G9 Ultrawide monitor

Hello! I found this thread and tried all the solutions with no help, i was in the exact same boat as everyone else here, but i figured something out and got it to work on my end, gunna share what i did in hopes that someone else might find this useful

i noticed when switching the refresh rate to 240hz the g9 would be fully black screen, i had to switch it back over to 120 just get it to turn on, adjusting the resolution only allowed me to go up to 3840. I had the idea of adjusting the refresh rate on the monitor itself down to 120 so it would match, and once i did that, system preferences suddenly allowed me to crank the resolution back up to 5120.

just match the refresh rate in settings on your monitor to system settings on your mac, its worth a shot if you havnt tried that yet!

Additionally, i am connected via USB - C to HDMI, no dongles or anything.

Ok, so I went to the display onscreen menu, and in the System section of this menu, there is an "Display Port ver." menu item, I switched from v1.1 to v1.4 and now I have 5120x1440x120hz without any issues.

I have Ventura 13.1 running, and I use USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable.

If you are connected through USB-C, see if your monitor’s menu system allows disabling USB over the USB-C port.

Still a problem on 13.2.1, I'm thinking of just returning my MacBook Pro, so frustrating that they won't address this....

I am connected via USB-C since that is the only option for me. What do you mean disable USB over USB-C?

I meant, disable it using the on-screen display in your Monitor. If it doesn't allow that, then there would be no way you could do it. I don't know if it would even help, but it seemed to help someone else.

I just had to return the Samsung Odyssey G9 - I could get max resolution through my macbook pro M1 - but the text was still completely fuzzy and was impossible to correct.

Such a shame - going to try a different screen setup, but not expecting it to be any different regardless of what ultrawide I go with!

Hi Subtronics, I nearly posted this, but found it failed after a few days, there is still an underlying issue with MacOS Ventura that needs to be resolved as it effects other Ultrawides also, I've had to resort to split the screen as it's the only way I can get the full resolution. but means I can't split windows across screens
