No Show Effects in Settings / Pencil on M1 iPad Pro and iPadOS 16.2

This article:

Use Apple Pencil with your iPad - Apple Support

… says I should find a “Show Effects” setting to turn on / off the new hover feature. I find no such setting, and can no longer use the pencil in some game apps. I suspect hover is messing up item selection.

Hello TexanInParis,

In the linked article (Use Apple Pencil with your iPad), it explains that there are specific devices that can use the Apple Pencil Hover feature:

"iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation) support Apple Pencil hover and can detect the position of your Apple Pencil (2nd generation) as it hovers up to 12 mm above the display."

Since your iPad & Apple Pencil should be supported, further assistance may be needed. We want to make sure you reach the right team for help with your device, so we recommend that you contact Apple Support directly. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Get Support.

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities and have a wonderful day.

Hello TexanInParis,

Let's use the steps below restart your iPad:

1. Press and hold either volume button and the top button until the power off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the top button until you see the Apple logo.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Restart your iPad Restarting can sometimes help address odd behaviors.

Should that still persist, how many games are exhibiting this behavior?

Are those games all up to date? How to manually update apps on your Apple device

Also, have you experienced this behavior with any apps that aren't games?

Let us know, and we'll keep moving forward from there based on those details.

Thanks for that information TexanInParis, it’s appreciated.

We checked the App Store and didn’t find any reference that Klondike Adventures supported using an Apple Pencil. We located another game which does support using an Apple Pencil to play.

Have you ever been able to use your Apple Pencil in Klondike Adventures? If you have, even though the title of this article doesn’t match your issue, the provided steps can help: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support

All the best.

Ah, but my iPad Pro 12.9" is 5th generation - with an M1 chip. It was my understanding that the "hover" feature works only on iPad Pros with an "M" processor, but the 4th generation iPad Pro 11" uses an A12Z chip. If that article is correct, then my assumption about needing an M processor was wrong. There must be some feature that is common to the A12Z and M2 chips but not included in the M1. That still doesn't solve my problem in certain games. I used to love playing with the pencil because it's much more accurate "selecting" an object than using a finger. On my M1 iPadPro in certain "adventure" type games, I now sometimes have to tap multiple times to get the object I want selected - which wreaks havoc with your score if the event is timed.

Tried a hard restart. No joy. Did a complete restore of my iPad Pro using my Mac - which should have given me a clean copy of iPadOS 16.2. No joy - although my battery life seems to be improved now. This is the only app that does this. I can use my pencil anywhere else - even in Mail and Safari - no problems. I’ve reported this behavior to the developers, including sending them a video of what’s happening. BTW, this is the Klondike Adventures app.

Ah, when I clicked your link to the app, there was an update available. Tried it, and pencil response is significantly better, but not as good as I used to get on my old 2018 iPad Pro. Yes, the pencil worked on that older device - perfectly. Perhaps they found something to tweak since my report to them about a week ago and this release. I’ll let them know.
