dfu mode

Ipod touch says it WAS in DFU and needs to be again to restore, but won't allow me to place it there. Screen just shows a usb and the itunes emblem, though it is plugged into itunes via usb.

Try https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode. You may need to put it back in DFU mode and restore once more. In DFU mode the screen should remain blank.

Well, that's the problem - I do need to put it back in DFU and CAN'T. It won't let me. I've followed all of apples instructions and it just stays stuck on that screen.
