Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you have some questions about using Dictation on your iPhone. If you tap the X, does anything change? Typically when you see that X, Dictation is already active and tapping it again will cause Dictation to stop. Another way to do this is to click on the microphone in the bottom right corner or wait 30 seconds and it will end automatically.
