iPhone iCloud storage

iPhone 14 all updates completed. iCloud backups are taking up 20 gig! How is this possible. Gone through the list and turned off many of the backup items. The largest files on iPhone 14 are messages - close to the 20 gig. If messages are already in the cloud, why is backup automatically backing up messages - again? How to stop it?

Hey there phil8,

We understand you've noticed that iCloud backups are consuming too much storage. We'd be happy to provide information to help you out.

Do you have Messages in iCloud enabled? If not, enable it so that the backups don't aren't so large:

Keep your messages up to date with iCloud

When you backup to iCloud, most everything not already in iCloud will sync. Toggling off items in iCloud only stops them from syncing, they will then be part of the device backup.

For example. If you have iCloud Photos turned on. Those items will not be in your device backup as they already sync to the cloud. If you have it turned off, all photos will be part of your backup.
