iPhone 13 Pro Max: water resistance

In February 2022 I purchased the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apart of my wanting to purchase it was sue in part for the reasons that it is being marketed as water resistant. there is still manufacturer warranty.

However, on a recent trip to Mexico, while sitting in the sand photographing waves, a rogue wave caught me and subsequently my phone got wet.

Okay. So it dried. I followed the instructions when it indicated the port was wet.

Two weeks later while in Dubai my phone would not charge with the lighting connector.

I took it to the Apple Store at the Dubai Mall of The Emirates and the Apple associate investigated and said it had water damage and repairs would be $500 CAD.

MY QUESTION: why is this device being marketed as being water resistant when in fact it just being wet has corroded one of of the lighting connector prongs inside the charging port?

Thank you for the reply.

I do realize that salt water is that: salty and corrosive.

However, it was not submerged into the water. It should be “resistant” to being caught in a wave , or “resistant “ to being dropped into a puddle as the marketing for the device suggests.

I’m wondering if others out there have experienced similar issues - suddenly wetness of the device - and lack of support from Apple. Maybe a class action based on false advertising is in the future. I’ll keep my receipt!

Water resistance of iPhone is tested under strict lab conditions and don't mimic life in the real world. Salt water is highly corrosive and your phone unfortunately got wet by a wave, which damaged the phone. And Apple is very specific that liquid damage (of any kind) is not covered by iPhone warranty.
