I am on OS Catalina and need to upgrade to Big Sur in order to run TurboTax 2022. System Preferences doesn't offer any upgrades at all. Is there a solution to get to Big Sur other than buying an entirely new iMac? I am awaiting the new 27" Mac and would prefer not to buy now.

You can try running this command in the Terminal. Assuming it works it will download "Install macOS Big Sur" into the Applications folder. You can run it from there.
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.7.2
Big Sur requires a Mid 2014 or later iMac.
Thank you. My iMac is "late 2015" and compatible with Big Sur. But, Big Sur is unavailable when I go into software updates.

No changes. The original late 2015 iMac with 16 GB memory and 1 TB drive. I was happy with OS Catalina until just recently when I discovered TurboTax 2022 requires an upgrade.
