One USB-C port stopped working suddenly

The rear/side USB-C port on my 2018 Intel MacBook Air stopped working suddenly yesterday. I was not doing anything at the time (it was "sleeping"). I'm on Ventura 13.0.1 . I've tried restarting, shutting down, resetting the SMC and resetting the NVRAM but these have not solved the problem. I'm out of AppleCare by a few months. Any ideas for fixing this? If the second port goes, my computer is kaput! Thanks in advance.

Thanks Sparks0829, I'm on OS 13.1 and is not just that a device (like a hard disc) will not work on the dead port, it's also the power cord. It was connected to the now-dead port and suddenly stopped charging. I switched to the other (good) port and all is OK. But I have one dead USB port!

Hi there chrisgalway1,

If one of the USB ports on your MacBook Air isn't working, you'll want to start by making sure it's updated to the latest macOS version, which is macOS Ventura 13.1. If needed, learn how to update your Mac here: Update macOS on Mac

If the issue persists after updating, try working through these steps to see if they resolve the issue for you:

Check the power, port, and cable connections: Make sure the USB device is turned on and its cables are properly connected. If your computer has more than one USB port , switch the device’s cable to another port. If you still can’t use the device, contact the manufacturer for more information.

If you can use the device after switching ports, connect another device to the first port. If you can’t use this device, shut down the computer and unplug it from the power outlet. Wait about a minute, then plug it back into the power outlet and start up your computer.

If you still can’t use a device with the port, your computer may need to be serviced. See Find out how to service or repair your Mac.

You'll find this information here: If a USB device doesn’t work with Mac

Take care.
