Try this: In the Home App tap on the HomePod icon , scroll down to Primary User, sign out, then sign back in
Additionally on the iOS device you used to set up HomePod look in settings - your name - iCloud- scroll down to Show All, make sure Home is enabled

Deleted from system and reinstalled. That solved the problem. Would have done this earlier but the methods to do so are hidden deep.
Would have been easier if Apple standardized their menus system wide....things became more opaque during the Johnny Ives period when he was messing with software. Nothing intuitive about problem solving.
