HomePod Mini Stereo Pair Wifi issues

I have a few HomePod minis and a couple of older HomePods. All connected to the same wifi network, and I am experiencing some odd behavior with wifi/internet connectivity.

the Issue I am facing is that when HomePod minis are paored as a stereo pair AND an Apple TV has them set as the main audio output, a few hours after the pairing is complete, anything I ask if Siri gets the same response “I am having trouble connecting to the internet bla bla bla”

if I split the homepod minis back as individual speakers, they maintain a solid internet connection (just like any other HomePod or HomePod mini I have) if I create a stereo pair AND DONT associate it with an apple

TV, the HomePod minis work like a charm, and I can still use them with the Apple TV by selecting them as a temporary output. Worth mentioning that when the homepod minis are in a pair and associated with an Apple TV the wifi indicators in the home app shows them as disconnected, which is what Siri seems to complain about, but the Apple TV is still able to stream to them. I would like to understand more what happens under the hood when HomePod minis are pairs together and with an Apple TV and if anybody has faced a similar issue recently

Hello hajarada,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get the HomePod mini working as expected with the Apple TV.

Let's make sure you're using these steps and meet the requirements to create the studio pair with your Apple TV:

"Here's what you need

  • Apple TV 4K
  • One HomePod mini* or HomePod. You can also use a stereo pair with two of the same type of HomePod speaker. Other AirPlay 2-compatible speakers are not supported with home theater audio.

* HomePod mini doesn't support Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.

Set up home theater audio

  1. Assign your Apple TV and HomePod mini or HomePod to the same room in the Home app. If you want to use two HomePod mini or two HomePod speakers, create a stereo pair, then assign the stereo pair to the same room as your Apple TV in the Home app.
  2. Turn on your Apple TV. You'll be asked if you want to Use HomePod speakers as Apple TV speakers. Select Use as Apple TV Speakers to turn on home theater audio. "

This Apple Support page has the full details: Set up home theater audio with HomePod mini or HomePod and Apple TV 4K - Apple Support

Try restarting all devices and testing again if the same thing happens. We hope this helps to isolate and resolve the issue so you can get the most from your devices.

Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to put an answer together, it’s not helpful to tell me “here are the documented steps” when I posted a problem that clearly indicates I have followed them. I am in touch with apple support in the issue ATM and it most probably is a bug. In case it was not clear in the original post, I have reset and restored software on HomePods and Apple TVs involved many times, and I clearly have created a stereo pair and clearly saying that the issue is when the pair is set as the Apple TV’s default audio output.
