Help! I can't type accented characters anymore!

It's December 2022, and I recently noticed that I can't hold down a key and type accented letters. My son studies French, and that simple function was the best. Every article I search where people had the same problem dates back to 2017, 2018,... but nothing recent. Everything I tried in settings doesn't make a difference. Why does Mac always take something good and ruin it with a new update? Does anyone have an answer to fixing this with simple steps? Thanks!

Make sure your input source is set to US in system settings > keyboard > input sources.

Make sure your Key Repeat rate is not set to OFF or very long in system settings > keyboard > keyboard

Make sure you do not have Webroot on your machine.

Try opening Terminal app and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

and then press return and restart.
