Custom thumbnails in Apple Photos 8.0

It's been asked before but answers are no longer relevant.

I have a shared folder on Apple Photos 8.0 with my husband for our travel videos. All videos have random thumbnails that don't help me, meaning I have to open the video and wait for it to load to see what they are. Videos are long so it takes ages to find the right one.

How do I add custom thumbnails?

If I open the video in Photos > Edit > Image > Make Poster Frame, it changes the thumbnail in my library but re-importing into the shared folder puts it back to default.

Thanks very much. That works initially, but it makes you edit it in your main library, and then when I drag it back into the shared folder, it reverts to the original thumbnail. Any ideas how to stop it reverting back? The Shared Folder is the key to how we organise our videos. Thankyou!

You might try editing the move via the crop triangles at the beginning. Move it to the first frame and then ee if it will stay that way when used in shared albums, etc. You do't get the frame you'd like but it may be better than a blank, black frame.

What kind of Shared Folder is it? A folder on iCloud Drive? Or a Shared album?

Setting a poster frame in Photos does not modify the imported original. It will only work within Photos. If you want to share a video with different poster frame outside Photos, use a different app to modify the video.

It’s a shared album within Photos. I can get a custom thumbnail for the video while viewing the version in my personal library, but importing it into the shared album immediately reverts it to the default thumbnail. But to edit it, it takes me back to my personal library. Hope that makes sense? Thanks!

Thanks. I’d imagine this will work. Problem is, most videos start with a car ride to the airport so it’s still not clear which trip it is. But better than a black screen. Thanks!

Have you tried created a separate Shared album for each trip? Then there would be no questions which it was.
