Unfortunately, your response does not address the situation where macOS and ios are current, aside from the fact that any update will not fix the issue. Neither will going to recovery and reinstalling macOS anything to do with ios or pos.

I have the fix and posted it on this community site it as a referral to a trusted and reputable website but Apple in its myopic vision deleted it. So I will leave it as an exercise for Apple and AppleCare to figure it out for themselves.

FYI: I am a former Apple employee with an employee number under 5000, and fed up with the support I have received for 3 years for a MacPro 7.1 2019 Desktop tower computer that has not worked correctly since a month after I received it.

Hi James Weil,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! For this issue, you'll want to follow the guidance below with includes updating your Mac if needed:

"The message says that a software update is required to connect to your iPhone (or iPad, or iOS device), and asks if you would like to download and install this update now. Click Install. After the update is installed on your Mac, you should be able to connect to your device as expected.
If you continue to see this message, update macOS on your Mac."

To update your Mac:

Update macOS on Mac

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.
2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.
3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.
