Is there anything helpful in the crash logs?
An extreme effort to solve this is to reset the printing system, which will remove your printers and prefs files. If you have multiple printers, you could try changing printers.

Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for answering. Nothing worked, so I called Apple Support. While troubleshooting according to his instructions, I discovered that neither CMND R nor Option CMND R would open the Recovery window to run Disk Utility. After an hour of futility on the phone, I made an appointment with my local Genius Bar. It was a software problem, not hardware, and required erasing the drive and reinstalling Ventura 13.1. After 2 1/2 hours in the store, it booted. I returned home to spend hours reinstalling all my apps, some of which I need to pay for again, and cleaning up the drive. The definitive cause: my original update to Ventura 13.1 corrupted the drive. Next time Apple announces a MacOS update, I'll wait a week before updating.
