Failed to bootstrap path

I get the following error in system.log when I try to launch a java application, both via the .app as well as the the executable directly.


com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.xpc.launchd.domain.pid.java.84147): Failed to bootstrap path: path = /xxx/.jenv/versions/openjdk64-1.8.0.265/bin/java, error = 2: No such file or directory


That path and file definitely exist, and the java works. I can run other java applications using that java without problem.


I've searched for the "Failed to bootstrap path" error, and there are a handful of threads I have found, but not exactly related, and none of the given advice seems to work for me.


This is a custom in-house java application which has run fine on this computer before.


And ideas?

Another step you can also take while contacting Oracle Support, you could also try making sure your Mac is up-to-date:

"Use Software Update

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
    • Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
    • Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.

2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.

3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.


If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only updates and upgrades that are compatible with your Mac."

You could also try is seeing if this Java app will run in a test user, as a new user doesn't have custom or changed settings, and can help determine possible next steps by isolating this further. If needed, this article shows how: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support
