email notification sounds

I can't seem to turn off the notification sound for email on my Mac. I'm not totally sure whether it's coming from the MAIL app that's part of the Mac itself of the GMAIL app that I use. I believe I've turned off notification sounds for both, but the sound still keeps happening with every new incoming message.

Apple Mail Sounds Cause Other App Sounds to Drop Out Folks since upgrading computers to an M2 Max MacBook Pro and moving to macOS Ventura by default, whenever Apple Mail receives mail in the background while using other apps the sounds to those apps stop. This has happened when watching streaming video on Safari and using Zoom for example. This has also happened wether I am plugged in directly to my speakers using the headphone jack or my AirPods bluetooth.. In all occasions the MacBook pro has been in clamshell mode as a desktop.

how do I enable sound alerts for MACMail? there is no option in preferences - please advise how do I enable sound alerts for MACMail? there is no option in preferences - please advise Using mac OS Monterey version 12.6 - in preferences the sound option is not there to enable. The Mail preferences sound is enabled but does not seem to work. I have upgraded as far as I can and restarted a few times. Super frustrating as I work from home and rely on the tone to know when a client is e-mailing me.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! For app notifications, you'll want to check the following settings that are listed in Apple menu > System Settings, then click Notifications, "Play sound for notification". The following guide list all the settings you can change:
