CarPlay and Apple Maps Spoken Directions

Since upgrading to iOS 16, Apple Maps no longer gives spoken directions when connected to CarPlay. I experienced the problem with my IPhone 12 Pro Max and with my recently purchased iPhone 14 Pro, in both of my vehicles - a 2021 Honda CR-V and a 2020 Kia Soul. I do hear spoken directions when not connected to CarPlay. My wife has an iPhone 12 Mini still running iOS 15 and I can hear directions when connected to CarPlay so it seems to be an iOS 16 problem. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, have you found a solution?

Hey mrf1209,

Hearing those spoken direction is important. If you haven't already, double-check the settings to make sure everything is set as it should be: Change settings for spoken directions in Maps on iPhone - Apple Support

Turn spoken directions on or off

On the map, tap the audio button (for example, ), then choose an option.

Button Description

All directions are spoken.

Only driving alerts are spoken.

No directions are spoken.

Change the volume for spoken directions

Press the volume buttons on the side of iPhone.

Yes I’m familiar with those buttons, and I’ve been in contact with Apple Support with no luck. I posted on this board to try to determine whether this is a widespread problem.

I was having the same problem with Google Maps until yesterday when I stumbled upon an option to turn off “Play voice over Bluetooth” in the app’s Navigation settings. Now I’m getting spoken directions with Google Maps.
