Unresponsive Touch Screen

My iPhone intermittently won’t unlock due to unresponsive touch screen. A reboot helps, but I really need to fix this because sometimes I can’t answer an incoming call. What kind of software reset would be best?

Hi joeproduces,

If you wish to restore the software on your device, If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen outlines the process to retain your data but reinstall iOS:

  1. "Connect your iPhone to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
  2. Select your iPhone on your computer.
  3. While your iPhone is connected, follow these steps:
  • On your iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation): Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then press and hold the side button.
  • On your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold the side button and volume down button at the same time.
    • On your iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Press and hold both the Home button and the side button or the top button at the same time.

4. Keep holding the buttons until you see the recovery mode screen.

5. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update.

6. Your computer will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode. Repeat steps 2-4."

You may also find the options in If the screen isn't working on your iPhone or iPad helpful. If the behavior continues, use Apple Support to investigate further with AppleCare Support directly.

Regards.

Hi joeproduces,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

Does this happen when using a particular app or performing a particular task? You mentioned that restarting helps resolve this temporarily, which iOS version is this happening on? When the iOS needs to be updated, we can experience unexpected issues such as this one.

To update your iPhone:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. Tap Install Now.

Hello joeproduces,

Does this occur while using Face ID or a passcode? You can disable Face ID with the following settings to test this:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode
  3. Confirm your passcode, if needed.
  4. Disable 'iPhone Unlock' toggle.
  5. Lock your iPhone
  6. Then attempt to unlock the iPhone to test it out.

Does it persist when Face ID is disabled, when the passcode is required? If so, then it would be best to contact Apple Support They'll need to take it from here.

Do you use a case or screen protector? If so, did you remove them to test this further? These can prevent you from touching the screen properly, if the case or screen protector is blocking your ability to swipe on the screen.

Do you see anything on the Lock Screen when this occurs? That will tell us more about what's going on.

Let us know and we'll continue to help out, take care.

So I have Face ID turned on, but the issue occurs before I get to that point. If I tap the screen to wake the phone up, the line appears at the bottom and when I swipe up to start the Face ID process, nothing happens. I have to volume up/volume down/hold power button to reboot. Once the phone has rebooted, I can swipe up and then enter my passcode (required after restart) and the phone works fine.

What is the best way to reset/restore iOS to see if there is maybe a corrupt bit of code causing this?
