smb file sharing stopped after installing Ventura

I have an old Mac Mini running on Monterey on which I share a folder containing all my files.

It was accessible from my Mac Studio with Monterey for months now.

Since I updated my Mac Studio to Ventura, it became impossible to access the shared folder on my Mac Mini.

I still can access my Mac mini with "Screen Sharing" and I can confirm that the share is still there and I can access the share from another computer, on the same network, running Windows 11 but NOT from my Mac Studio.

Can someone help me understand what's going on ?

Hello ScienceTrip,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

Sometimes, an update can change something in the computer that allows it to be recognized by other devices. Since this happened after an update, you may need to remove your Mac Studio from being shared and then add it again. To do that, follow the steps found here: Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support

Kindest regards.

Hello ScienceTrip,

Thank you for letting us know. Let's try a few things.:

First,

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Choose the Finder menu, then Preferences.
  3. Select sidebar.
  4. Make sure Bonjour computers and Connected servers are checked.
  5. If you want to see a server you’re connected to appear on the desktop, click General and choose Connected servers.

This will ensure that server can be seen and should make it accessible.

If that doesn't work, double check this section:

  1. Launch System Preferences and select the Sharing pane.
  2. Make sure File Sharing is checked.
  3. Ensure the folder you want to access is in the list of shared folders. If not, press the ‘+’ and add it.
  4. Is your username in the list of Users? If not, press ‘+’ and add it, then type in a password.

Please let us know if this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the comment but, it does not fit my situation: you said that I may need to remove my Mac Studio from being shared and then add it again! My Mac Studio is NOT sharing files at all, as I mentioned, it is my old Mac Mini running on Monterey on which I share a folder containing all my files.

My Mac Studio, now updated to Ventura, is unable to access the shared folders that are on my Mac mini.

On my Mac mini, I tried disabling all my shares, rebooting, and then share one new folder ; my Mac Studio is unable to see the new shared folder while, from a Windows computer, I can not only see the shared folder but enter in the folder and create new files.

Obviously, I make sure to give the read-write permission to my account and I make sure to type the appropriate password.

So, what I want is to give a second live to my old Mac Mini, with the "File Server" role .. as I said, this "setup" was successfully working for months and suddenly stopped after installing Ventura on my Mac Studio.

Note1: my Mac Mini is "the server" and my Mac Studio is "the client computer"

Note2: I cannot install Ventura on my Mac Mini because it is to old

Please, help

best regards
