AirTag Issue - NEW Battery Doesn't Work

First, there doesn't appear to be any classification (device/topic) related to AirTags. I have replaced the battery and my AirTag is not working. I read somewhere that Duracel batteries (and possibly others) DO NOT work with AirTag, despite the fact that they are the correct 2032 3V batteries. Is Apple replacing these defective devices?

Hey there midabe,

We'd like to help get your AirTag working right, so we'd like to confirm our understanding of what's happening, along with ruling out some basics:

  1. You mentioned that you recently replaced the battery, but did you hear the sound described in this link that includes the steps to replace the battery and set up your AirTag? Check out: How to replace the battery in your AirTag
  2. Have you tried using your AirTag with a different device other than your iPhone?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone
  4. If you're using a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.1.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!

Same problem. I have a card full of brand new Duracell 2032 batteries with bitterant coating. None work as a replacement for my AirTags. These batteries meet industry standard for CR2032 devices. Button cells are a deadly hazard to children. It would be encouraging for Apple AirTags contacts to work with bitterant-coated batteries to protect children.

Hello midabe,

Since you aren't able to use that particular brand of battery with your AirTags, definitely double check to see if they have a bitterant coating:

CR2032 batteries with bitterant coatings might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products, depending on the alignment of the coating in relation to the battery contacts.

You can also find those details in this resource: How to replace the battery in your AirTag - Apple Support

If that particular criteria doesn't apply to the batteries you purchased, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support: Contact - Official Apple Support They'd be in the best position to look into this further.

Take care.

As expected, I purchased some non-Duracell CR2032 batteries and the AirTag is working fine.

My previous question still remains - The Duracell batteries are not defective. The AirTag should work, as they are valid batteries built according to spec. The issue is with Apple's AirTag product.

The fact that AirTags are not working with Duracell batteries, which are a very common brand, is somewhat of a known issue. When I posted on the community I was pretty direct as to what the issue is (which is a documented issue). Yet you seemed to pretty much ignore my description of the issue and reply to some very vague directions related to replacing a battery. Not very helpful....

Hopefully this post will help others when they search on the topic. For me, I found the documented issue on a YouTube video.

Cheers!
