How do I tell email program that certain emails are definitely not junk?

I get several times per day emails about breaking news from the NYTimes. The program colors them brown as it thinks they are junk. I frequently clicked "not junk" but it seems there is no function that teaches the program that. Is there a setting where I can change it?

Thanks.

It may take a while.

In the Mail Settings > Junk, there is an option to Trust Junk email headers. If some server somewhere added X-SPAM headers to the message, then Mail will always "trust" that header and assume it is Junk no matter what training you give it.

Take a look at the message headers (View > Message > All Headers). If you find an X-SPAM header (or any variant of SPAM), then that is what is happening. If it doesn't have those headers, it may take a while to convince it.
