Recovery Contact won’t work

Why does it say that my recovery contact can not be my recovery contact unless he has iMessage? It says you can only add account recovery contact who uses iMessage! So I’m thinking if that person goes into their iMessage settings and changes their way of contacting them to their email and phone number then it might work?? I’m just not understanding this. I know it is sent as a message to ask them to be the recovery contact but… need help with this please. Thanks in advance!

Hello Howiekaren,

It sounds like you are hoping to add an account recovery contact, right? There is no requirement for the contact to have iMessage. Take a look at this information here:

Set up an account recovery contact - Apple Support

"Requirements for setting up a recovery contact

All of your devices must be running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, or macOS Monterey or later. You might be prompted to update any devices not running the latest OS, or remove any devices that you aren't using.
You must be over the age of 13.
You need two-factor authentication turned on for your Apple ID."

Yes, that’s what I’m trying to do. Add my husband. But every time I go to add him it pops up and says he has to be using iMessage. Which he is only using his phone number for iMessage not his email. I’m thinking if he changes or adds his email to iMessage then that might work. But it will NOT let me add him using his email or Apple ID! And I read that article, it says no where in there about having to have iMessages. But that’s what pops up when I try to add him. Weird. Thanks for your help and time tho.
