I am trying to recover a deleted text message. When I click 'edit', I don't see the 'show recently deleted' option. Is there a way to rectify this ?

You must have installed iOS 16 on your phone.......before......you deleted the messages.......and.....the messages must not have been deleted for more than 30 days or so.
If you deleted a message.....before.....you installed iOS 16, the message is gone.
I deleted the text earlier today, and I installed iOS 16 within the past hour. I checked my settings and the switch for Messages is not on. So if my icloud backup was yesterday, if i restore it will enable me to view texts i deleted today?
Yes, but restoring the backup will overwrite everything on the phone, not just one deleted message. It will essentially set the phone’s contents back to the time of the backup, except it will not replace iOS 16 with iOS 15.

As we have stated, you have to install iOS 16 first.....then delete the message for it to appear in Recently Deleted.
Your wife must have deleted a few messages.....or.....iCloud updated some deleted messages.....after.....iOS 16 was installed.
As a test.......delete a message that you no longer need. Wait a few minutes, then see if Recently Deleted has activated. iOS 16 makes it a lot easier to retrieve a deleted message, but you can't delete a message then expect to retrieve it 40 days later.

Thank you. So even though the backup was prior to the deleted message, that message will appear?
the text was received after the backup.....so restoring the backup isn't gonna help me out.

I believe the difference is....she had iOS 15 prior to installing iOS 16....i was a few updates behind.
That doesn’t make any difference at all. You can’t restore texts that were deleted before iOS 16 was installed. It doesn’t matter whether the previous version was 15, 14, 13, or any other version.
My wife is able to....can't think of any other reason.
I’m certain your wife can only recover texts she deleted after updating to iOS 16. Any texts deleted before the update were completely removed, so there is no way hey could be recovered.
