AirPods Pro sound on iPhone is very bad

i have the iPhone 13 mini. I recently got AirPods Pro. The sound on my phone with them is very bad. It’s muffled & scratchy but the sound is perfect on my daughter’s iPhone 12 & her iPad. Any suggestions on how to improve the sound quality on my phone
