Scam or authentic?

" Hi

I was buying a Macbook for the first time and thought I'd go on ebay since I was on a tight budget

found an M1 Air (16gb,512gb)

contacted the seller and asked him for :

1) the serial number

2) the battery capacity (to double check the serial number)

3) and also to run a full diagnostics test

and this is what he replied with.

Now, since it's my first time buying a Macbook

I'm not really familiar with the problem he's facing

Is it a real issue or am I potentially being scammed? "

Hello Ahmad_012,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Which macOS version is currently installed on the device?

If they're having no Wi-Fi icon when activating Mac, and running macOS other than Ventura, here's what they can try:

1. Restart.

    • Choose "Macintosh HD" (startup volume) if prompted.

2. Try to access other areas of Recovery if possible.

3. Use Ethernet.

4. Try step 3 here: Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon using Apple Configurator

5. Menu Bar > Recovery Assistant > Erase Mac. This will remove all data from the system.

6. Restore firmware by following step 4 here: Revive or restore a Mac with Apple silicon using Apple Configurator

If the Mac is running Ventura, let us know, and we'll go from there.

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Run away from that deal and don't look back.

Sellers of used Macs must comply with Apple's instructions, here: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support. They are not optional. That Mac will not work in its present condition, and whoever buys it that way will have to return it in accordance with eBay's policies. The entire transaction will amount to wasted time on all three parties: buyer, seller, and eBay.

Good for you that you asked those questions.

Since the seller has no way to remove the activation lock, avoid purchasing it because the inability to do that renders the Mac useless.

Personally, I would not buy any laptop sight unseen from any one other than a reputable dealer in used Macs like OWC or Mac of All Trades. Both have a 14 day return policy and both offer a limited warranty.

The best source to save money on a recent model laptop would be buying a refurbished Mac directly from Apple. They are covered by a full one year warranty and are also eligible for AppleCare+ coverage which also covers accidental damage.
