Apple trade-in a scam?

I received an online trade-in quote for $365 for a nearly 4-year old Macbook Air. I brought it into the store physically because I wanted to know if this was an accurate quote - affecting which new computer I was going to buy. Again, I was told the online quote was $365. However, after I mailed it in, they now claim it has zero value because of streaks across the screen and a dent (which I never saw). What a waste of time. I am worried they are going to send me back my laptop damaged.

Has anyone had a good experience with the trade-in program? I wish I had researched it better before bothering. I am only seeing negative experiences.

Since you asked, I have been using the Apple Trade-in program for a number of years with my purchases of various Apple devices, including Apple laptops. The quote provided, which as you know is based on your honest answers to the provided questions about the condition of the device. The device is then evaluated by a third-party that Apple uses for this program. So far, in my case, I always got the quoted price for my trade-ins.

So now, is it possible that a device could be damaged during shipment. Yes, but if properly packed with the supplied packing material, this should be a rare occurrence ... but, is it still possible that it got damaged during shipment or by mishandling by the evaluator. Again, yes would be the answer.

FWIW. One thing, for future reference, would be to take a number of photos of your trade-in for proof of its physical condition BEFORE you place it into the shipping container.

In this case, you have the choice of asking for your MBA to be returned. You can then try to sell it outright yourself. You can also contact Apple Support directly for guidance on what to do in this situation.

Also, one reason that you are "seeing negative experiences" is because folks typically only report the negative ones. The many others, who did not share this same outcome, you usually don't hear from.

Thanks. Yes, I am an idiot for not having taken photos before sending it off.

In the end no big deal - I can either sell it or donate it. It is just frustrating because I did answer the questions honestly and I also took it in to get it evaluated in person, which apparently is meaningless. Just a waste of my time is all.

I have, yes. Expect that the device you trade in will be examined with a degree of scrutiny usually reserved for precious jewelry and similar items of value. I realize you characterized your Mac as accurately as possible, and yes there is a possibility it was damaged in shipment, as well as an equal possibility it could be further damaged on its way back to you. As a rule I don't do that but I am fortunate enough to have Apple Stores nearby so that there are no surprises.

No, it's not a scam, but you will almost certainly get more for your Mac by selling it yourself. Apple's trade in program is merely a convenience.
