How to remove attachments in Apple Mail while using a Gmail account and not delete the email?

This is an ongoing issue, I have two Google accounts that I have set up in Apple Mail - if I try to 'remove attachments' on an email with attachments it deletes the entire email. How do I do this without removing the entire email from the inbox?

Hi mr.cooger,

Here's some information from the View, save, or delete email attachments in Mail on Mac resource that you might find helpful:

1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, select a message that includes one or more attachments.
2. Choose Message > Remove Attachments.
The message remains in the mailbox and is annotated to indicate that all attachments were manually removed. For IMAP accounts, attachments are also deleted from the mail server and can’t be retrieved.
When you delete a message that includes an attachment, the attachment is deleted too. To change this setting, choose Mail > Settings, click General, click the “Remove unedited downloads” pop-up menu, then choose an option. Mail doesn’t delete attachments that you have saved.

We hope this resolves things for you.

Take care.

It's interesting that after contacting Gmail support they pointed me to Apple to find the solution, gotta love passing the buck! Why can't Apple and Google play nice with each other? As professionals, we generally end up using products from both companies, and this is a simple function of email, it worked just fine when our company email was based on Hostgator.

Hey mr.cooger,

To isolate the potential cause you can create a test user profile on the Mac. Add your email accounts in this new user, from a few different email accounts, and see if the issue persists.

"Add account

Create a new user or group.

Click the New Account pop-up menu (you may be asked to enter your password), then choose a type of account."
