Play counts not updating

What does it take to get play counts to work across all devices? If I play a song from my library on my phone, the play count should be reflected in Music on my Mac. Maybe not instantly, but it should update at some point.

Recently I've noticed the first song I play on my phone gets the play count updated, but no other songs. I listened to an album on my phone and the next day the first song (only the first song) had the play count updated. Same for a play list.

If Apple is going to raise the price of the service, then the service should work.

Hi,

I made the changes in Settings as suggested, but the problem remains the same. Play counts from my iPhone don't reflect in my Library on my Mac. The first song I play gets updated, but only the first song.

Hi AlwaysBreaking,

We want to ensure the appropriate settings are enabled for your play counts to be added on your Mac, when you play music on your other devices.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click Sharing on the right. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the Info button  next to Media Sharing.
  3. Select the Home Sharing checkbox.
  4. Enter your Apple ID and password, then click Turn On Home Sharing.
  5. Select "Devices update play counts"

As mentioned in Set up media sharing on Mac would need to be enabled if you want to update play counts (the number of times an item has been played) when the items are played on other computers in your Home Sharing network, or on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Cheers!

Both my devices have been updated, I updated them before I posted the issue hoping the updates would fix it.

My home network shouldn't have any impact since Apple Music is a cloud based service. The devices aren't connected to each other, they are connected to iCloud. Each device should be updating my iCloud music library. If I am out of my house listening to music on my phone, it should update iCloud. If I start something on my phone and send it to my HomePod, the play counts of all songs played on the HomePod should update in my music library.

AlwaysBreaking,

Restart both devices as that could give them a fresh connection to each other and, if possible, restart your router as well:

  1. Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Be sure to follow the steps for the model of iPhone you have: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

If you still have issues, be sure both devices are also updated:

Take care.
