Any track stops after about 10 seconds, while Music seems to be "waiting for Bluetooth device"

All of a sudden, I can't play music in Apple Music. Any track stops after about 10 seconds. During that time, it says "Waiting for Bluetooth device" in the bottom left corner, and then it stops and the message disappears.

I tried turning off bluetooth, disconnecting and reconnecting my AirPods Pro (which has failed so far). But I've only used the AirPods with zoom, not with apple music.

It's completely unclear why Music would be looking for a bluetooth device when it's clearly set to play through external speakers.

Anyone have an answer here? I'm stumped.

To clarify, Apple Music is looking for a Bluetooth device, even when Bluetooth is turned on? Let's make sure you are turning off Bluetooth in Settings and not through the Control Center. When using the Control Center, this disconnects your device from Bluetooth accessories. When you use Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth there, it completely disables Bluetooth:

Also, let's make sure your device is up-to-date. If it is updated, let's restart your device. Restarting your device and making sure it is updated can resolve many unexpected issues.
