External HD dismounts when Mac is asleep

Just got my Mac Studio. I am running OS 12.6 and using an old G-Technology 3 TB external hard drive with old Thunderbolt. When I put my Mac to sleep my external hard drive dismounts. When I wake up my Mac I don't see it in Finder or when I launch Disk Utility. I need to turn off my external and then turn it back on so that my Mac can see it again. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?

Additionally it's constantly winding up and winding down when visible to my Mac.

This has been reported by many including myself. Only real solution is not to use sleep function. With my Mac Studio I just have display turn off or use screen saver. I use auto shut down at night and auto startup each am.

No issue with SSD and in addition rebooting your Mac clears out caches, etc. and improves efficiency. I have shut down my Mac each day for years and have had zero issues but you can leave your Mac on all the time and just reboot occasionally without issue. it's up to you.

Unfortunately I put my computer to sleep at the end of the day every night. I'll avoid using Sleep for now. Isn't it a bad idea to Shutdown every night? Doesn't it wear out the hardware faster?
