How to stop USB hard drive from sleeping so often?

My hard drive keeps going to sleep regularly making work in Ableton Live very difficult, it cuts the sound as it wakes up and loads audio, and any time I search for a plugin or sample I have to wait while the drive wakes up again. Supposedly with this type of hard drive (WD Elements) you can't change its native settings to keep it awake for longer so it seems a 3rd party to keep writing blank text files to it could work?

I found this little app but it was last updated in 2019 so it doesn't work.

Can anyone tell me how I can stop the drive from sleeping so often? Perhaps there's a newer version of this type of app available somewhere?

OS: macOS 12.5.1

Drive: WD Elements 4tb

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.14

Hi Mickmon,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

While we don't have information on any similar apps, we'd advise contacting the app developer for the third party app you found. They may have more information about future updates. Please see: How to contact an app developer

"Contact the developer of a macOS app

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Click the sign-in button  or your photo.
  3. A list of apps appear. Click the app that you want. If you can't find the app, use the search bar.
  4. The app's product page appears. Scroll to the Ratings & Reviews section, then click App Support. If you don't see App Support, make sure that you're signed in with the correct Apple ID."

Have a fantastic day!
