When I try to sync my iPhone it gets interrupted with the following message:
Some items, including (song title) were not copied to the iPhone "iPhone" because you are not authorized for them on this Mac.
Not clear what to do.

Were you able to complete these steps in order to authorize your Mac? That's what you'll need to do, specifically for the Apple ID used to first purchase or download those songs. They're linked to the Appl ID, so you Mac needs permission to access them.
