MacOS Ventura has broken USBC - Display port Cinema Display monitors again??

So, back in the days of Big Sur, the OS Broke apple cinema displays using Display port adaptor to USB C connections on MacBook pros. They seem to have done the same thing AGAIN with Ventura

when I updated my MacBook Pro (touchbar 4 USB C) my 20” Cinema Display is now flashing on an off again rapidly as it did with big sur. This time however you can’t fix the problem by restarting the laptop.

yes I know the display is OLD. That’s not the point. The point is that apple continue to break things that should work fine! I have friends who are graphics pros using large format display port connected monitors still as they are reference grade displays. And they are having the same issue.

apple supports solution … buy a new monitor. 😡😡

After hours with Apple Support and getting my ticket escalated I'm still experiencing the same issue or next steps from Apple on how they plan to resolve this.

  • Reinstalled OS
  • Booted in Safe Mode *this did resolve the issue temporarily (in Safe Mode), but next step was to create a new account to see if startup apps were causing the issue but the issue still existed with a fresh account.
  • Tested all Disks
  • Updated monitor firmware (needed to use a colleagues computer who hadn't updated to Ventura in order to do this)

Again, the workaround I've found is to use an HDMI which is less convenient, lower resolution, requires a dongle, and forces me to also plug in my charger.

Same thing happened to my Dell 49' curved monitor as soon as I updated. I would always plugin with the USB type C and it's now unusable. The only workaround I've found is to use an HDMI and old dongle which also requires me to plug in my Macbook charger since I was previously able to charge with the same USB type C that was also connecting to my monitor... Resolution for HDMI has decreased and I now have a mess of cords everywhere...

Buying a new monitor is unacceptable and it clearly isn't related to the age of the monitor.

I have the same issue. I just upgraded the system software on my Mac Book Pro to Ventura and now the graphics on my 24" cinema display are shaking. Does this mean there is no fix? They must have had system updates following Big Sur because my MacBook Pro to Cinema Display has been working fine up until this point (mini display port adaptor and USB C adaptor).

I really cant afford to get rid of the display. And it is environmentally irresponsible to make us throw them out to buy new ones.

This is in fact not a solution. As others here mentioned they have relatively new monitors, and I do as well. The USB connection does not work. My panel is 5K via DisplayPort, but maxes out at 4K via HDMI. The "HDMI workaround" doesn't work for me.

This is so incredibly frustrating – I also contacted Apple support and had the ticket escalated and they just stopped contacting me. I had to update to Ventura on my work Macbook and I'm getting max 1080p through DisplayPort/ USB Type-C. This isn't an issue on my personal Macbook that I kept on Monterey. I understand they rewrote a lot of these drivers, but how long until they realize that their DisplayPort driver is completely broken?
